Nestled in the heart of Poplar, London, the vision was to sensitively reimagine the former Poplar Town Hall—a striking Grade II-listed High Victorian Gothic building dating from 1870—into a boutique luxury hotel. The ambition embraced preserving its rich architectural heritage while crafting an exquisite destination for discerning guests seeking historic grandeur combined with contemporary luxury.
The restoration honours the building’s original polychromatic brickwork, Portland stone detailing, and the majestic grand staircase bathed in natural light through a Victorian rooflight. Concealed energy-efficient LED lighting subtly enhances the intricate architectural features by night. The hotel houses 37 bespoke rooms, including a spectacular penthouse suite within the soaring 11-metre octagonal dome, featuring a striking cantilevered oak-and-glass staircase leading to a private mezzanine bathing retreat. Public amenities include a spa, restaurant, and elegant meeting and leisure spaces—all designed to offer guests a seamless blend of historical elegance and modern comfort.
CMT Construction meticulously executed the refurbishment with a focus on heritage conservation and quality craftsmanship. Every element reflects a commitment to sustainability and guest experience—from the restored façade to the sophisticated interiors. The Poplar Hotel stands as a celebrated example of adaptive reuse, revitalising a historic landmark into a thriving, high-end hospitality venue in East London.
